Dr. Schurter was born in Sacramento, California, and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from the University of California at Davis in 1964. He then entered the U.S. Army, where he served with distinction for 27 years, achieving the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. During this time he worked primarily in the areas of logistics operations, systems engineering, research, development, and testing. While in the Army, he attended the University of Southern California, where he received a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering, in January, 1978. Later, he served as an Assistant Project Manager for the development of a major U.S. Army missile system and was subsequently designated as a certified U.S. Army Materiel Acquisition Manager.
Dr. Schurter retired from the Army in 1992 and moved to San Antonio, Texas, where he worked as a part-time teacher of mathematics for several different colleges and universities. He joined the University of the Incarnate Word in 1995, where he was both a member of the adjunct faculty and a graduate student, earning a Master of Science Degree with Distinction in Mathematics in August, 1998. In June, 1999, he accepted the full-time position of Coordinator, Academic Literacy Mathematics, a position that he continues to hold. Dr. Schurter received his Ph.D. in Mathematics Education from UIW on December 8, 2001. The title of his dissertation was “Comprehension Monitoring and Polya’s Heuristics as Tools for Problem Solving by Developmental Mathematics Students.” Dr. Schurter continues to apply his research in the classroom, as he strives to improve the teaching and success of our developmental mathematics students.
