Marithza Calderon has always been a risk taker who has had a firm faith in God’s plans. Her journey at UIW and beyond began as a founding reporter at UIWTV which ultimately led her to her dream job as a Meteorologist at Univision.
Calderon is a recent graduate earning both a Bachelor of Science degree in Broadcast Meteorology and a Masters of Applied Administration in Organizational Development. Her education gave her a strong background to succeed in the broadcast industry. While in the MAA program, Calderon commuted to Victoria, TX where she served as a video journalist, later moving to a morning meteorologist position at news Channel 25, KXXV-TV. It was there that she realized that KUIW had more cutting edge technology than her first television job. It became instantly clear to her how much her education and training with UIW and KUIW were crucial to her success. Soon Calderon was able to show others her capacity to lead as she started leading training sessions.
During her last semester in the MAA program she accepted a freelance opportunity with Univision 41 in San Antonio, TX. Calderon left her fulltime position in Victoria for a 90-day freelance meteorologist position. She explains, “I took the risk of having no job because of the confidence I had in my education and degrees”. Calderon completed her freelance with no offer to stay, moved back to the Rio Grande Valley and was later hired as Chief Meteorologist for FOX 2 in the Rio Grande Valley.
In June of 2013, Calderon’s previous risk-taking paid off as she was asked to return to San Antonio for a full time position as Chief Meteorologist for Univision San Antonio. She is pleased to serve as one of the few female meteorologists for the Univision Television Group (UTG) in the entire national network scale. She is most proud of being the only UTG Bilingual female meteorologist in the state of Texas.
