University of the Incarnate Word’s women’s soccer team was picked to finish second in the Heartland Conference in the Preseason Coaches Poll.
Defending champion St. Edward’s University (17-4 overall in 2007) was voted to repeat as the top team in the conference. The Hilltoppers return several key players to a squad that saw its season end in the NCAA Division II National Tournament to Central Oklahoma.
Incarnate Word, meanwhile, returns senior goaltender Ashton Caffrey (18-3-1 overall record in 2007 with eight shutouts), Heartland Freshman of the Year and Cardinals’ leading scorer (18 goals) Sarah Hernandez and Lianah Flores, an All-Heartland and Daktronics All-Midwest Region award-winner (nine goals in 2007).
St. Mary’s University rounded out the top three and UT Permian-Basin, Texas A&M International, Newman University and Dallas Baptist finishing up the poll.
The Cardinals start their 2008 campaign this Saturday, August 23, with a contest at home against Southwestern (time TBA).
