Engineering

Pre-Engineering Program

Engineering is one of the most in-demand professions in government and industry. These are some of the top paying entry-level jobs in the marketplace today. The mission of the Engineering Department at UIW is to provide talented students with the basics of an undergraduate engineering education in the context of the University's integrated program of liberal arts and professional studies.

This two-year plan of study would have the student lay a groundwork of math, science and computer courses which could then

a) be transferred to a school that offers a four-year bachelor’s degree in a branch of engineering, or
b) be used as part of a degree plan at this University in an area such as mathematics, computer science, environmental science, or nutrition science, or
c) be the basis for the Bachelor of Science in Engineering Management degree offered at Incarnate Word.

This program is outlined as a fairly ambitious two-year program, covering four semesters. (See Pre-Engineering Checklist) This time line would be lengthened if, for example, the student
· was required to take ALMA, College Algebra, and Precalculus math classes,
· prefers to take Calculus I as a prerequisite rather than a co-requisite for Physics I,
· chooses to take a course load of less than the suggested 16-17 hours per semester.
In these cases, the pre-engineering program would be expanded into a three-year program, and may include some additional math and science classes during that third year.
