Dr. Pat LeMay Burr, Distinguished Chair in the H-E-B School of Business, has been selected as an Apple Distinguished Educator for 2013.
Honored for her work in mobile learning, Dr. Burr has led mobile initiatives at Incarnate Word, first integrating the iPad into a Digital Media class in Summer, 2010.
“The award recognizes what has been done, not what we’re thinking about doing,” Dr. Burr said. “Its focus is on our goals, what our students and faculty have achieved, and about the overall digital commitment on campus.”
Dr. Burr also was instrumental in the formation of the iPad User’s Group on campus, which now counts more than half of UIW full-time faculty as members.
The group meets regularly, discussing new “apps,” or applications that run on the devices, and sharing tips for using the tablets in the teaching and learning process.
Dr. Burr credits the number of apps available for the device for the group’s success. “We have used leading edge applications for achieving productivity, mobility and creativity in the classroom, and particularly in the MBA program,” she said.
As dean of the school of business, she oversaw the Laptop University initiative, which put laptops in the hands of all undergraduates, beginning in 2000.
The Apple Distinguished Educator Program began in 1994, when the company first recognized classroom innovators using Apple products at both the K-12 and Higher Ed levels.
Dr. Burr will join other selectees this summer in Austin for an Apple Distinguished Educator Institute, during which educators will focus on professional development, collaboration, and content creation.
In the coming year, she will test new Apple hardware and software, and blog about her experiences with the products in the classroom.
“The coolest thing about the process is that it reflects the institutional importance of the entire iPad experience on the UIW campus,” she said.
