HOW YOU CAN HELP

Ruth L. Desotell had a long and distinguished career of nursing in the military before her retirement.  She was also quite adept at managing her financial affairs. Perhaps from her own experience, she knew that financial hurdles hamper many young people who want to study to be nurses.

Ms. Desotell creatively used her will in two separate ways to achieve her goal of helping students become nurses at the University of the Incarnate Word.  First, she designated a generous “specific gift” of $75,000 to go to the University of the Incarnate Word to help students in the undergraduate nursing program.

Secondly, she directed that “a percentage of the remainder” of her estate — after all other specific gifts and expenses had been deducted — would also go to nursing students at the University of the Incarnate Word.

Because she was fortunate in her investments and financial affairs, this “remainder gift” turned out to be a sum well over $300,000.  The University will combine her two gifts into a permanent, endowed scholarship in her name. Many nursing students in the years ahead will benefit from this woman who used her life savings to continue her life’s work, by making it possible for students today to follow in her footsteps.

You too may be able to use some of your financial assets to make a substantial difference in the lives of our students through a planned gift to the University of the Incarnate Word.

WHAT IS PLANNED GIVING?

Planned Giving helps you design your charitable giving to UIW both now and in the future so that you also fulfill your personal financial goals. Many times, someone who believes they can only make a small immediate gift will see their gift multiply in impact through a planned gift option.  While helping to advance our great University, a Planned Gift can provide you valuable benefits, including one or more of the following:

WHY MAKE A PLANNED GIFT?

Your contribution to UIW is an investment in the future of both our students and this institution.  For over 125 years, Incarnate Word has shaped future leaders not only for the South Texas community but for the expanding global community. From a local women’s college to a co-educational international center offering bachelor, master’s, and doctorate programs to more than 5,000 students each year, UIW has emerged as a premier private university in the Southwest.  Your support has driven this evolution and pushes UIW to excel in its next 125 years.
