therapypicThe Bachelor of Music in Music Therapy is a professional degree designed to train students in clinical applications of music, blending musical skills with specialized training in the areas of psychology and the behavioral and natural sciences. In order to graduate, degree candidates will demonstrate technical command of three instruments (voice, guitar, keyboard) sufficient to be able to communicate and improvise through music in various clinical settings. Audition Requirements-Audition Dates-DEGREE SEQUENCE 

Prerequisites: Students who, at the time of their entrance audition, are deemed unprepared for freshman-level MUAP lessons or MUSI courses may be placed in one or more the following courses: MUAP 1144, MUSI 1311, MUSI 1381, MUSI 1100, MUSI 1300. These courses are prerequisites to the pursuit of a music degree at UIW and are not counted as part of the degree or as free electives.

Requirements for the B.M. in Music Therapy (135 credit hours)

A. Musicianship (34 credit hours):

B. Applied Music and Ensemble (20 credit hours):

• 10 credit hours of lessons in voice or principal instrument:

• 4 credit hours of Music Therapy applied courses:
 MUTH 2150 Percussion for Music Therapy (1)  MUTH 1145 Voice for Music Therapy (1)
 MUTH 2101 Guitar for Music Therapy I (1)  MUTH 2102 Guitar for Music Therapy II (1)

• 6 credit hours of major ensembles: Chorale (MUEN 1131), Orchestra (MUEN 1185), or Band (MUEN 1140 and MUEN 1185)

  • Voice PRINCIPALS should be in Chorale (MUEN 1131) both Fall and Spring
  • String PRINCIPALS should be in Orchestra (MUEN 1185) both Fall and Spring
  • Guitar and Piano PRINCIPALS should be Chorale (MUEN 1131) both Fall and Spring
  • Woodwind, Brass, and Percussion PRINCIPALS may choose between Marching Band (MUEN 1140 or Chorale (MUEN 1131) in the Fall and should enroll in Wind Ensemble (MUEN 1185) in the Spring

C. Music Therapy (32 credit hours):

• MUTH 4301 Music Therapy Internship* (3) (Must be taken twice for a total of 6 credit hours) NOTE: Prior to registering for MUTH 4301 Music Therapy Internship, all Music Therapy majors must pass the Piano Proficiency Exam and Piano Improvisation Competency Exam, and all coursework must be completed.

A minimum of 120 semester hours is required for graduation, with no less than 36 upper- division (3000-4000 level) courses. It is the student's responsibility to ensure that all requirements for the degree are fulfilled as stated in the undergraduate catalog.
