Athletic training is a program that is currently in transition to a graduate level degree and is no longer accepting new applicants.
The Athletic Training Program is the newest professional program in the Ila Faye Miller School of Nursing and Health Professions. The program was established in 2001 to meet the guidelines and standards established by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education, the National Athletic Trainers Association Education Council, and the Texas Advisory Board of Athletic Training.
In cooperation with physicians and other health care professionals, the athletic trainer functions as a member of the athletic health care team in secondary schools, colleges and universities, professional sports programs, sports medicine clinics and other athletic health care settings.
In May 2005, the Athletic Training Education Program was granted initial accreditation through the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) through the recommendation of the Joint Review Committee on Educational Programs in Athletic Training (JRC-AT). In July 2006, the JRC-AT broke away from CAAHEP to form the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE). This is an independent accreditation agency dedicated toward the advancement of the education of athletic trainers. The program went through CAATE re-accreditation including a completing an institutional self study and site visit during the 2009-2010 academic year.
The program was re-accredited from CAATE until the 2019-2020 academic year. The program has been placed on Probation as of February 19, 2016 by the CAATE, 6850 Austin Center Blvd., Suite 100, Austin, TX 78731-3101. This is due to the three year average first time pass rate on the Board of Certification exam being below 70%. Since a major programmatic revision in academic year 2014-2015, the average for first time test takers is 90%. The changes that have been implemented are instrumental to the success of the students and it is anticipated that the probationary status will be removed in 2017.
