Under-Represented Groups in Education

2008 URGE Schedule Set

Women’s issues are the focus of three special presentations set Thursday, March 27, at the University of the Incarnate Word.
Under-Represented Groups in Education will spotlight these issues at its fourth annual spring forum in sessions at noon, 3 and 5:30 p.m. Refreshments are planned at the noon and 5:30 sessions.

Activist Ann Helmke, director of the peaceCENTER in San Antonio, will look at challenges and perspectives at noon in Marian Hall Ballroom. From 3 to 4:15 p.m., Martha A. Ojeda, editor of NAFTA from Below, will look at “Maquiladora Workers.” Her presentation will be in J.E. and L.E. Mabee Library Auditorium. The concluding program at 5:30 p.m. in the auditorium will feature Dr. Jackie Claunch, president of Northwest Vista College, on women’s achievements.

Helmke's job as peaceCENTER director is to promote the principles of nonviolence to the larger community, and to connect individuals and organizations dedicated to promoting world peace. She has organized peace vigils, table gatherings, teach-ins and peace labs. One of her key efforts lately is to promote the U.N.'s “Decade for a Culture of Nonviolence” from 2000 to 2010.

Ojeda, executive director of the San Antonio office of the Coalition for Justice in the Maquiladoras, received the Emilio Krieger Award for social activism from the National Democratic Lawyers Association in Mexico City.

Claunch has been Northwest Vista’s president since 1998. She has overseen the school’s growth from a handful of students taking classes off-campus and in portable classrooms to a bustling college of almost 10,000 students who participate in a wide variety of academic disciplines and occupational/technical programs. The college is currently breaking ground on buildings that will house additional classrooms, a new library and a new campus center.
