Secretary Shinseki Orders Emergency Checks to Students Awaiting Education Benefits; Thousands of Checks to Alleviate Student Financial Burden

Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki announced the Department of Veterans Affairs has authorized checks for up to $3,000 to be given to students who have applied for educational benefits and who have not yet received their government payment. The checks will be distributed to eligible students at VA regional benefits offices across the country starting October 2, 2009. More information

In San Antonio, the VA's Frank Tejeda Clinic at 5788 Eckhert Road 78240 (699-5054) will be the local point of assistance. Students should visit the 2nd Floor and ask for either Lynn Patrick, Ricci Santos, or Darlene Cooper in the Benefits Office.

They will need a photo ID and a course schedule to request advance payment of their education benefits.

Your next steps:

  1. Apply to the UIW program of your choice: Main Campus Admissions or the Extended Academic Programs Adult Degree Programs
  2. Apply for your choice of Veterans benefits
  3. Once accepted, ensure all required documentation has been sent to the UIW VA Coordinator:

    • Letter of Eligibility from VA
    • Military transcript(s)
    • Transcripts of other institutions previously attended
    • Copy of your DD214
    • VA Enrollment Certification Request Form (Download as Word or PDF)
  4. Chapter 30 Veterans may verify their monthly enrollment by either clicking on the WAVE link or by calling the Interactive Voice Response (IVR) System: 1-877-823-2378
