UIW ACCESS

UIW ACCESS Logo

UIW ACCESS is a textbook program that provides undergraduate and graduate students e-books or printed textbooks for academic courses. Students earning bachelor's, master's or doctoral degrees from UIW schools on the Broadway campus will have access to course materials each semester.

How Does UIW ACCESS Work?

The UIW ACCESS program will deliver the most up-to-date e-books or printed textbooks to students.

Nearly 75% of students agree that having access to their own textbook helps them earn a better grade in a class.

With UIW ACCESS, students will have course materials available the week prior to the first day of class (or within 48 hours of registration for digital materials if within the add/drop period). UIW faculty use course materials, such as textbooks, during each class. UIW recognizes that it is critical for students to have those materials on hand and ready for use as they begin each term.

Qualifying Academic Programs

All students earning bachelor's, master's or doctoral degrees from UIW schools on the Broadway campus will participate in the UIW ACCESS program with the exception of Nursing courses.

Benefits of UIW ACCESS:

  • Obtain course materials prior to the first day of class
  • Use the latest editions for every course
  • Access textbooks on digital devices or pick up a hard copy
  • Elimination of over 800 course and lab fees

Frequently Asked Questions

Most courses use e-books for courseware. You can find your e-books in Canvas, a UIW learning management system, by logging into Cardinal Apps. In Canvas, click on your course and then select the BryteWave link named “BryteWave Course Materials” to access your e-books.

Digital textbooks will be available in Canvas the week prior to the first day of class (or within 48 hours of registration for digital materials if within the add/drop period). You will receive an email notification from BryteWave (donotreply@redshelf.com) through your UIW email account with instructions on how to access the material. Or watch the video above for step-by-step guidance.

BryteWave is a digital textbook platform. You can highlight text, bookmark, search, sort and take notes using BryteWave.

If you do not receive an email in your UIW email account from BryteWave, but believe you have digital textbooks, go to the BryteWave web site. Log in using your UIW email address and your BryteWave password. If you do not know your password, select "Forgot Password" and enter your UIW email address. The login information will be sent to your UIW email.

Most courses use e-books or courseware, so your e-books will be included in your Canvas course under the tab titled BryteWave Learning Materials. Physical learning materials (textbooks and course documents) will be available for pick-up at the UIW Broadway campus at the Student Engagement Center (SEC) room 2050 as follows:

  • January 6 - 12, 2025:  Noon - 6 p.m. (SEC 2050)
  • January 13 - 18, 2025: 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. (SEC 2050)
  • January 20 - 24, 2025: Noon - 6 p.m. (SEC 2050)

Students will receive an email notification to their Cardinal email from the Follett Bookstore when materials are ready for pick-up (customerservice@efollett.com) detailing the physical course materials assigned and an order number. Students are asked to bring this email containing their order number with them to present to the Follett campus bookstore staff who have prepared and pre-packaged their orders for rapid fulfillment.

Students enrolled in undergraduate, graduate or doctoral nursing courses (prefix NURS) will be able to purchase their learning materials through the UIW Bookstore.

Distribution Schedule

Physical materials will be distributed at UIW Student Engagement Center (SEC) room 2050 located at 4301 Broadway, San Antonio, TX 78209 (view map). Students are strongly encouraged to pick up their materials prior to the start of classes or as soon as convenient once classes begin.

If physical materials have been assigned for the upcoming term, students will receive an email from the Follett campus bookstore (customerservice@efollett.com) with an attached "packing slip" detailing the physical course materials assigned. Students are asked to bring their "packing slip" with them ready to present to the Follett campus bookstore staff who have prepared and pre-packaged their orders for rapid fulfillment.

The physical materials distribution schedule for the three-week period of January 6th to January 24th 2025 is as follows:

  • January 6 - 12, 2025:  Noon - 6 p.m. (SEC 2050)
  • January 13 - 18, 2025: 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. (SEC 2050)
  • January 20 - 24, 2025: Noon - 6 p.m. (SEC 2050)

Please submit questions on the process for additional assistance.

The UIW ACCESS program works on a semester basis. Learning materials are supplied the week prior to the beginning of the semester.

All Broadway Campus undergraduate, master's and doctoral students are eligible for the UIW ACCESS program. This program covers e-books and textbooks for the fall and spring semesters. The UIW ACCESS program is not currently available for summer terms, May term or winter term.

Note: Nursing students start at the university as pre-nursing majors and then go through a separate admission to the major in their third or fourth term after completing a set of pre-requisites needed for the nursing curriculum. Factors such as transfer work, repeated classes, etc. determine when a student can apply and be admitted to the nursing program. Prior to admission to the major most nursing students enroll in courses other than nursing. Books in the non-nursing courses are covered under the UIW ACCESS program.

After admission to the major, nursing students enroll mostly (but not exclusively) in nursing courses. Nursing courses are designated with the prefix NURS. Materials for NURS courses (bachelor's, master's and doctoral level) are available for purchase at the UIW Bookstore as they are not part of the UIW ACCESS program. All other Broadway courses will participate in the program. So depending upon your specific enrollment pattern, students pursuing Nursing degrees will likely have courses participating in the UIW ACCESS program (e.g., non-NURS courses) and others that do not (e.g., NURS courses).

The UIW Access Textbook program is included as part of the University student fee. Additionally, over 800 course and lab fees have been eliminated. This program covers e-books and textbooks for the fall and spring semesters. The UIW ACCESS program is not available for the summer terms (extended, mini I or mini II), May term or the winter term.

Beginning with the Fall 2022 term, undergraduate and graduate students at the Broadway campus will no longer receive book disbursement funds. Students will continue to receive all remaining financial aid funds as a refund based on standard institutional processes.

If you are utilizing Chapter 31 Veteran Readiness and Employment, the University Student Fee will automatically be invoiced to the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) along with your tuition. UIW Bookstore Supply Vouchers will continue to be issued each semester to VR&E students upon VA Certification. Specialty Items must be approved by the VR&E Case Manager and approved on your Payment Authorization. For more information, please contact the Military and Veteran Center at (210) 832-5651 or veterans@uiwtx.edu.

Printed books may be kept by students. Digital materials will be available based on the publisher's terms.

The UIW Bookstore will provide required textbooks for courses until the drop/add deadline. The bookstore will automatically create a new order as you add your classes.

If a digital book is available for the class, access will be provided in Canvas located by logging in to Cardinal Apps. You will receive an email notification with information on how to access your e-book through BryteWave within 24 hours of adding the course.

If print books are used for the class, your order will be processed within 48 hours. Upon our receipt of the print book, you will receive an email with the subject "Your order is ready for pickup" once your material is available.

The University will make every effort to ensure printed textbooks and e-books are available by the first day of class. However, some elements such as schedule changes within a week prior to the beginning of the term, and changes during the add/drop period will impact orders and may have outcomes beyond the control of the University. Physical products are dependent upon supply chains which are unpredictable at present. Electronic materials can be processed and added quickly, generally within 48 hours of the change in registration.

Yes, if you drop a class prior to the official add/drop date of the course, those physical materials must be returned to the UIW Bookstore. Access to electronic or digital materials will simply be disabled.

Physical items adopted for a class must be picked up prior to the end of the term in which they are scheduled. Orders that remain after the term end date are canceled and are no longer available for students. There are no refunds or discounts if materials are not accessed.

Digital materials are available based on the publisher's terms.

If you earn an incomplete, the instructor will work with the bookstore and publisher to ensure access. The UIW Bookstore will ensure students have access for up to 90 days after the end of the term to complete needed work.

Most courses use e-books or Courseware included in your Canvas course. It is recommended that you download the Canvas App at Cardinal Apps to access your Learning Materials using a mobile device or tablet.

A student can print, but it is up to the publisher how much of the e-book can be printed. Printing costs of an e-book are not covered under the UIW ACCESS program.

The degree programs offered by the School of Physical Therapy, Feik School of Pharmacy, Rosenberg School of Optometry, and the School of Osteopathic Medicine do not participate in the UIW ACCESS program.

In the Ila Faye Miller School of Nursing and Health Professions, students admitted to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing (ABSN), Master of Science in Nursing Leadership and Doctor of Nurse Practice degree programs are not participating.

Students in the School of Professional Studies (SPS) do not qualify for UIW ACCESS, however, undergraduate students in SPS do receive free e-books/textbooks. All active duty service members in the School of Professional Studies also receive free e-books/textbooks for bachelor’s and master’s degree programs.
