Department of Religious Studies
Welcome to the Department of Religious Studies at the University of the Incarnate Word. Religious Studies furthers the study and understanding of the Roman Catholic tradition, offering broader cultural and global contexts in which it is celebrated, and prepares students to pursue futures in religious, academic and other related fields.
Religious Studies is multidimensional and interdisciplinary, encompassing the study of religious traditions, theory, theology and expression, but also of the people who practice them, and their impact on the world. The department offers a Bachelor of Art, or B.A., in Religious Studies, and a minor, both of which integrate the study of ethics, cultures, history, literature, art, media and contemporary issues, and utilize different research and teaching methods.
In keeping with the University's Mission, the Department of Religious Studies has a twofold mission: to acquaint all students with the Roman Catholic tradition within the broader religious and global context in which they live, and to expose all students to the multidimensional and interdisciplinary methods utilized within the field of religious studies.
Undergraduate Religious Studies students have many opportunities to enjoy an active, engaged and fulfilling college experience. For instance, students are invited to attend The Pierre Fund Speaker Series, which began in 2001 as a way to bring distinguished women scholars of religious studies to campus to address current issues relating to social justice, ecology and globalization.
Alumni have gone on to a variety of careers and educational pursuits, including divinity schools at Yale, Harvard and Vanderbilt universities, Catholic Theological Union, Oblate School of Theology, non-religious graduate school programs and teaching and education.
