Program Curriculum
The RN to MSN program at the University of the Incarnate Word is a fully online, accelerated program designed for academically talented registered nurses who have an associate degree or diploma, have completed Undergraduate Health Assessment and Statistics and want to earn their graduate degree in nursing. This program is a catalyst for leadership roles in the healthcare industry.
- Classes are offered 100% online.
- The program consists of a minimum of 40 credit hours (9 BSN and 31 MSN) and students transfer 60 ADN credits. Selected courses at the BSN level including Community Health Nursing and a bridge course must be completed prior to transitioning to the 31-credit MSN-Leadership curriculum.
- Clinical experiences are generally completed during daytime hours.
- At UIW, each student is assigned a clinical coordinator to help with preceptorship placement. If you can’t find a preceptorship through your own networking, UIW will help locate a preceptor within a 60-mile radius who fits your license requirements. UIW partners with CHRISTUS, University Health System, Methodist Healthcare System and over 100 community agencies.

RN-Master of Science in Nursing
The UIW RN-MSN program is designed to prepare students for roles in executive and advanced healthcare leadership.
The Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing, Master's Degree in Nursing, Doctor of Nursing Practice Program and the Post-Graduate APRN Certificate Program at University of The Incarnate Word are accredited by The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education at 655 K Street, NW, Suite 750, Washington, DC 20001.
Applications to the RN-MSN program are available in October for a spring/summer semester start. Depending on prerequisite requirements, start date may vary between March and June. Deadline to submit applications is at the beginning of March.
Admissions Requirements
- An associate degree with a major in nursing from an accredited program
- An unencumbered license to practice nursing in the State of Texas or one of the compact states recognized by the State of Texas
- A minimum of one-year experience as a registered nurse is preferred, but not required
- A grade point average of 3.0 in undergraduate coursework
- 60 credits of associate or baccalaureate level coursework
- Three satisfactory references (academic and/or professional)
- Official transcripts sent from each college/university attended (including hospital school of nursing, if appropriate)
- Individual consideration given to those applicants who do not entirely meet specific requirements
