Welcome to the School of Mathematics, Science and Engineering

The School of Mathematics, Science and Engineering at the University of the Incarnate Word is where the future scientists, mathematicians, statisticians, nutritionists and engineers prepare for meaningful careers of impact.

Located in San Antonio, the School of Mathematics, Science and Engineering (SMSE) is readying future leaders in a wide range of fields to shape and inspire research, industry and scholarship in South Texas and throughout the world. SMSE is home to UIW's dynamic science and engineering degree programs that span seven departments, including Atmospheric Sciences and Physics, Biology, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Engineering, Mathematics and Statistics, Computer Information Systems and Cyber Security Systems, and Nutrition. A brand new B.S. in Data Sciences program will be added to the offerings of the department of mathematics and statistics starting Fall 2020.

Through a rigorous curriculum taught by faculty who are leading researchers and experts in their fields, students are prepared for futures of innovation and discovery. In addition to the comprehensive undergraduate and graduate degree programs, students engage in a wide range of practical exploration and research opportunities in fields from the chemistry of medicinal plants, to flight controls to DNA dynamics, infectious disease transmission, and neurological regeneration.

Cutting edge labs, weather forecasting production studio, commercial-grade kitchens, and computer-aided drafting stations are just a few of the state-of-the-art resources available to students across three science buildings on UIW's Broadway campus.

Additionally, students are often invited to participate in ongoing research with faculty to gain hands-on experience as well as contribute to the research. Every summer a select group of students are selected to help work with faculty on rigorous scientific research for five weeks through the annual Welch Summer Research Program.

SMSE students also enjoy a full and active student life and can participate in any number of student organizations or help support summer science initiatives such as the Science, Engineering and Mathematics Institute. As students of the University of the Incarnate Word, they learn and grow in an environment centered on the core values of education, truth, faith, service and innovation.
