March 2025 | We Iranian Women (2023 — 61minutes), All March Long
Through exclusive testimonies and clandestine videos, We Iranian Women gives voice to courageous women in Iran who risked their lives to share their stories. Many prominent women in culture, art and academia, who were forced to leave their beloved country, explain through their perilous and often tragic experiences. The film chronicles their ongoing battle against patriarchy, economic crisis, corruption, and rigid religious and ideological beliefs.

International Women's Day (IWD) is a global celebration of the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. Each year, this day serves as a powerful reminder of the progress made toward gender equality and highlights the work that still needs to be done. For 2025, the National Women’s History Alliance (NWHA) proudly presents the theme “Moving Forward Together! Women Educating & Inspiring Generations.”

An Evening with Kathy and Lionel Sosa
March 18 | 4:30 p.m. | Mabee Library Auditorium
“An Evening with Kathy and Lionel Sosa” will take place at the Mabee Library Auditorium. Our two dear friends and valued members of the San Antonio community will share their inside perspectives on the terrific documentary and art exhibit Al Otro Lado del Espejo, helping us understand the significance of San Antonio's missions, and the special relationship between San Antonio and the city of Querétaro. Excerpts from the documentary, along with photos of the exhibit and the Sosas’art will be shown and discussed. Also, in celebration of Women’s History Month, Ms. Kathy will speak about the women who have helped lead the journey of constant change in and around the border, and who have embodied the cultural mestizaje of South Texas as discussed and represented visually in Revolutionary Women of Texas and Mexico and her more recently published Mestizaje. A catered networking reception will follow.

Women’s History Month Lecture Featuring Contemporary Children’s Author Kathey Morris Mercer

The English Department and Women’s and Gender Studies is proud to host Kathey Morris Mercer as our annual Women’s History Month Speaker. Morris is the author of the middle-grade devotional, Victory in My Backpack (2024) and the picture-books, The Princess Saves the Kingdom (2023) and The Kingdom of Honey (2020). Morris is a retired educator who is passionate about teaching children to read. She is therecipient of five outstanding teacher awards in Tennessee, Alabama, and Texas and an achievement award in poetry by the International Society by Poets. She will discuss her journey as a woman writer and how to craft children’s books that resonate with different audiences. We look forward to having you join us!

UIW Women’s History Month Community Breakfast

Celebrate the incredible achievements of UIW women faculty, staff, and students at our Women's History Month Breakfast! This event will highlight accomplishments from 2024-2025, with a special recognition of UIW Women in Nursing Students. We'll also hear from Dr. Veronica Martinez Acosta, Professor of Biology, who will share insights on the importance of women in STEAM fields and discuss some of her molecular research conducted with UIW undergraduates. Enjoy a morning of community and engagement, featuring Women's History Month trivia and a special benediction from Sr. Walter Maher, reflecting on the legacy of the Sisters of Charity. More details will be shared as the event approaches. Faculty, staff, and students are welcome to attend! Seating is limited.
