The Ettling Center for Civic Leadership & Sustainability plays a critical role in developing and preparing students to be engaged and informed citizens throughout their academic tenure at the University of the Incarnate Word. This is achieved through a focus on leadership, global engagement, advocacy, sustainability, and service learning.
The Center actively assists faculty and the broader campus community in fostering an intentional and progressive pedagogical environment aimed at establishing a culture that:
- Empowers individuals to acknowledge their responsibilities as members of a broader community, actively addressing social conditions through mutually beneficial and reciprocal partnerships with community organizations.
- Provides a range of opportunities and programs designed to enhance students’ awareness and comprehension of pressing social and global issues and challenges, thereby constructing a robust framework for responsible citizenship.
- Delivers increasingly sophisticated learning experiences that contribute to the development of essential competencies required for effective citizenship, including communication, collaboration, critical analysis, problem-solving, and leadership.
- Recognizes and honors the achievements of students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community partners who exemplify the principles of good citizenship, actively engage in civic matters, and support the civic initiatives and programs of the university.
