Types of Aid

UIW awards scholarships based on academic excellence, performance in a specific activity (such as the fine arts) or on other criteria established by donors. For a listing of available scholarship opportunities, visit Scholarship Resources.

Students should take advantage of all scholarships in which they meet the eligibility requirements including external scholarships.

Federal Direct Student Loans are low-interest loans that must be repaid at a future date, usually beginning six months after graduation, periods of non-enrollment or less than half-time enrollment. An unsubsidized loan is not awarded on the basis of need. Interest is accrued from the time the loan is disbursed until it is paid in full.

For more information about federal student loans, visit studentaid.gov.

Graduate PLUS Loans are unsubsidized, credit-based loans that graduate students may apply for to assist with educational expenses. Loan eligibility is based on credit history, a minimum of half-time enrollment and completion of a FAFSA.

For more information about federal student loans, visit studentaid.gov.

State loans are credit-based and may require a cosigner. However, state loans generally offer more favorable terms than other alternative loans. Students are encouraged to maximize federal loans before borrowing state loans.

Private (or “alternative”) loans are provided by outside companies, usually banks, for educational expenses. These loans are credit-based and will often require a valid cosigner in order to qualify. Interest rates are market-based, and can be either fixed or variable. Students are encouraged to maximize federal loans prior to using private loan. A list of common lenders can be viewed at the UIW Financial Aid site under Loan Assistance.
