Gainful Employment Certificate Programs and Programs that Prepare for Licensure
This web page meets federal guidelines to publish summary information about programs that can lead to gainful employment (GE programs), including: the total cost of a program, average length of time to completion, and average amount of debt upon completion.
This page also meets federal guidelines to disclose whether a program meets any requirements for professional licensure, certification or the related exam and for which states those requirements are met.
Although this page is periodically updated, some information might not be available for newer programs or for programs with small numbers of graduates.
The certificate programs listed here are currently not eligible for federal aid unless taken during concurrent completion of a master’s program.

Programs that Prepare for Licensure
The 30-hour Master of Science in Accounting (MSA) program provides graduates with the credentials required by the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy to sit for the national CPA licensing examination.
The Master of Science in Athletic Training (MSAT) program includes a combination of coursework and clinical experiences to prepare graduates to sit for the national Board of Certification (BOC) exam. Passing the national exam qualifies an athletic trainer to be eligible for licensure in any state.
The Dreeben School of Education offers an opportunity to earn an undergraduate degree and Texas Teacher Certification. Students pursuing a future in elementary teaching earn a Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies (B.A.) with a reading minor and an optional special education minor. Students selecting secondary-level teaching or all-level teaching will major in their chosen discipline and minor in education.
These programs do not lead to certification in any other state.
The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Design granted by UIW meets the educational requirement for eligibility to sit for the National Council for Interior Design Qualification Examination (NCIDQ Exam). For more information about NCIDQ Exam eligibility visit the Council for Interior Design Qualification's website. The exam is not required to serve as an interior designer in the U.S.
However, the exam is a requirement when an interior designer is applying for the higher standard to become a Registered or Certified Interior Designer (depending on the state). In order to be a Registered Interior Designer in Texas, an interior designer must graduate from a CIDA accredited school like UIW and pass the NCIDQ.
Students who earn their Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from UIW will have completed the academics and national exams that prepare them for a training license that allows them to practice medicine in Texas, but only under the supervision of a fully licensed physician, in a residency program in their chosen specialty. (Many states limit the number of attempts a learner may take to pass the national exams, and failure to fall within their guideline on a number of failures allowed, will result in failure to obtain licensure in that state.)
The duration of this training varies from three years for Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, and Pediatrics, to five years for Surgery, Orthopedics, and Obstetrics and Gynecology, and seven years for Neurosurgery. Physicians must successfully complete their residency to seek to become Board Certified in their specialty. While some states allow a physician to receive a license after only one or two years of residency training, it is very difficult for physicians trained in the 21st century to practice medicine without being residency trained and board certified.
Students who complete the Bachelor of Music in Music Therapy are eligible to sit for the national examination offered by the Certification Board for Music Therapists. Music therapists who successfully complete that independently administered exam earn the “music therapist - board certified” credential (MT-BC). That credential qualifies them to serve as a music therapist in all states.
The Nuclear Medicine Technology Baccalaureate program prepares graduates for national certification exams given by the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB) or the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). Passing either of these exams qualifies the graduate to work in any state. Some states also require a state license. Once nationally certified, the graduate may apply for the state license to work in any chosen state.
At successful completion of the four-year Bachelor of Nursing Science degree, the graduate will be qualified to sit for the national NCLEX-RN examination and complete the registered nurse (RN) licensure process. Passing the national exam qualifies the RN to apply for licensure in any state.
Upon completion of the Didactic Program in Nutrition and Dietetics (DPD), a student becomes eligible to apply to an Accredited Dietetic Internship program. Successful completion of both the DPD and a Dietetic Internship makes a student eligible to take the Commission on Dietetics Registration (CDR) credentialing examination to become a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) in the United States. Students must apply and be accepted into the DPD program at UIW. Undergraduate students complete the didactic requirements while completing the Nutrition and Dietetics track of the Bachelor of Science Degree in Nutrition.
The Doctor of Optometry (O.D.) program prepares graduates to complete the national and Texas licensing requirements. The National Board of Examiners in Optometry (NBEO) provides the national testing. While each state has their own requirements for licensure, the UIWRSO program prepares graduates to be eligible for those. The following link provides direct information through the National Board of Examiners in Optometry (NBEO) website on licensing requirements by state.
The Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree is awarded after completion of what is equivalent to a four-year professional degree program. Students who achieve the PharmD degree must also pass the North American Pharmacist Licensure Exam (NAPLEX) and state law examination in order to engage in professional practice.
The UIW PharmD program prepares students to sit for the Texas state law examination. Determination has not been made whether this program prepares students for the law requirements of other states.
In addition to having successfully completed UIW's entry level Doctor of Physical Therapy program, physical therapists must pass the National Physical Therapy Examination (NPTE) governed by the Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy (FSBPT). They must also comply with individual state licensing board requirements.
Doctor of Physical Therapy graduates can sit for the NPTE four (4) times each year (January, April, July, and October). They must apply to the state they intend to work in and receive approval prior to taking the examination.
