Cardinal Chorale
Welcome to the Cardinal Chorale
The Cardinal Chorale (MUEN 1131), directed by William Gokelman, is the primary vocal ensemble of the UIW Music department and is one of the largest student organizations at UIW. Members include students from many different academic disciplines and, occasionally, UIW faculty and staff.
The Chorale represents UIW via seasonal performances and concert tours throughout San Antonio and Texas, and several Southern states. Highlighted performances include two in Carnegie Hall (2010 and 2000), Lincoln Center (2017) and numerous radio and television appearances during the Christmas season.
In 1996, the Chorale was asked to sing the "Star-Spangled Banner" (arranged by William Gokelman) with Tejano star Emilio Navaira at the NBA All-Star game, held in the Alamodome. Prior to that, the Chorale was invited to sing for the Mass celebrating the 25th anniversary of San Antonio Archbishop Patrick Flores. The Chorale has been featured on two CDs of liturgical choral music, "Behold" and "Mirad," both published by Good For The Soul Music. In 2008, the Chorale was invited to be the featured vocal ensemble for the San Antonio Founder's Day celebration in San Fernando Cathedral.
Chorale members in good standing are eligible for section leader scholarships. There are four section leaders, one for each section of the choir (soprano, alto, tenor, bass). Section leaders assist the director by running sectional rehearsals and setting the tone for proper choir behavior and preparedness. To be eligible, students must: be in good standing with the Cardinal Chorale, pass an audition with the director and have a class standing of sophomore or higher.
Audition
An audition with the director is required for membership in the Cardinal Chorale. To schedule an audition, contact the chorale director, Professor William Gokelman, at gokelman@uiwtx.edu.
