Department of Sociology

The study of human beings, the societies they have formed, the way they live, their belief systems and how they come together is critical to understanding and addressing social issues, now and in the future. Through a diverse catalogue of courses, UIW’s Sociology Department prepares students to grasp the root of today and tomorrow’s societal challenges and contribute to improving them – whether through careers in social services or individually.

The mission of the Sociology department is to provide students with a strong foundation in theory and research within the context of a modern sociological curriculum. The department is committed to the development of the “sociological imagination” and the fostering of action based on a progressive social consciousness. The department is guided by the values of Catholic social doctrine, the Mission of the University, and a high regard for scholarly academic work that leads to the enhancement of knowledge.

Sociology majors earn a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Sociology, a degree program that offers an academic specialization and a professional specialization. Students examine social stratification, minority relations, sociological theory and more as they seek to understand and explain how and why people think, feel and act the way they do. Sociological studies include culture, religion, government, economy, education, family, crime, sports and race relations. Throughout the program, students develop their “sociological imagination,” or understanding the relationship or influence on individual behavior and lifestyle and society, and learn to act based on a progressive social conscience.

Professional development and field study are important parts of the Sociology program. Students can take an internship class that provides them with more specialized opportunities to study the specific career path that interests them, such as social work, rehabilitation or advocacy. Additionally, students are invited to broaden their perspectives by attending department-hosted guest lectures, taking part in service-learning opportunities and meeting like-minded peers in SAGE, the department’s student organization.
