Course Schedule
Course Delivery Format
The Master of Health Administration program at the H-E-B School of Business and Administration follows a specific sequential course schedule to ensure students continue to effectively build on their learning and progress through degree completion. Courses are delivered in an eight-week, mini-semester format throughout the year with each course only offered once a year. Classes are held exclusively in the evenings and meet twice a week from 6 to 10 p.m. (CT) on Tuesday and Thursday evenings for the residential classes and on Monday and Wednesday evenings for the online live classes. Students take two courses at a time during most of the eight-week terms. This is considered a full-time program and a part-time option is not available.
Year 1 - Fall Semester
HADM 6360 Managing Healthcare Organizations
The purpose of this course is to provide the student an understanding of management principles for the purpose of achieving health services organizational goals and objectives. Emphasis is placed on the skills and competencies necessary for effective health services management as well as the functions performed by, and roles required of, middle-level managers. Critical skills, competencies and roles covered in the course include those related to motivation, leadership, conflict management, negotiation, problem-solving, power and influence, communication, coordination and support service management. Course topics are discussed and explored within the context of key organizational dimensions including environment, structure, process, human resources, performance and adaptability.
HADM 6305 Health Services Financial Management I
This course provides students with the foundations of financial and managerial accounting applied to the unique healthcare services delivery environment. Topics covered in this course include healthcare insurance and reimbursement methodologies, preparing financial statements originating at the individual business transaction level, evaluating financial statements and other operating indicators to assess and improve the operational status and financial condition of health services organizations, managing the revenue cycle, and conducting cost and profit analysis.
HADM 6306 Health Services Financial Management II
This course provides students with the necessary foundation for understanding and managing the financial aspects of the modern healthcare organization. Topics covered include organizational budget preparation and variance analysis, cost allocation decisions, application of the time value of money and cash flows to return on investment decisions, evaluation of debt and equity financing, including management of financial risk. Additionally, students will be exposed to the complex reimbursement methodologies currently used in the health services field and learn how to make pricing decisions.
HADM 6320 Organizational Behavior and Theory in Healthcare
The focus of this course is the application of theory in the organizational healthcare setting. Emphasis is placed on the skills and competencies necessary for effective healthcare leaders who must motivate and lead others in adapting their organizations in a dynamic and constantly changing environment. This course focuses on in-depth analysis of the theories and concepts of organizational behavior and theory as well as the functions performed by, and roles required of, entry- and middle-level managers. This course will progress from individual, to group, to organizational dynamics in the healthcare setting.
Year 1 - Spring Semester
HADM 6302 Healthcare Economics
This course orients students to the economic principles that influence market performance, management decision-making, and the formulation, implementation and evaluation of policy within the health services industry. Additionally, this course provides the students with a comprehensive view of the insurance market and introduces legislative dynamics that impact market behavior.
HADM 6303 Population Health and Epidemiology
This course introduces students to the principles of epidemiology as a diagnostic discipline of population health and a framework for evaluating the efficiency and effectiveness of resource allocation related to the triple aim of a) improving population health, b) improving the healthcare experience, and c) decreasing per capita costs. Emphasis is placed on understanding epidemiological information, the concept of risk, and the tools used to evaluate health problems and policies at a population level. The purpose of this course is to familiarize the student with the role of monitoring population health and how epidemiology relates to health needs assessment, health promotion, the measurement of healthcare effectiveness, and the formulation, implementation and evaluation of public policy.
HADM 6311 Human Resource Management and Ethics in Healthcare Organizations
This course introduces students to the fundamental principles of human resources management with a focus on issues confronting healthcare administrators. Emphasis is placed on the competencies necessary for effective recruitment, training, compensation, evaluation, retention, evaluation and development of human resources within the healthcare industry. Special attention is given to issues related to the ethical applications in relation to the clinical workforce.
HADM 6350 Quantitative Analysis for Healthcare Managers
This course introduces students to research method techniques and common statistical applications of importance to healthcare managers. Emphasis is placed on the study of statistical techniques for problem-solving and decision-making, including the theoretical and applied statistical and quantitative skills required to understand, conduct and evaluate managerial research.
Year 1 - Summer Semester
HADM 6330 Legal Issues in Healthcare
This course addresses legal issues pertaining to health services as they relate to providers and consumers within the healthcare system. Course topics include corporate liability, medical malpractice, patients’ rights and governmental regulations that affect healthcare facilities and personnel.
Year 2 - Fall Semester
HADM 6380 Healthcare Policy
This course covers the essential elements of healthcare policymaking, including its formulation, implementation and evaluation. Students will examine the various forces that influence health policy formulation and the different approaches to policy implementation at the governmental and organizational level. Current health policy issues and legislation are covered, and students evaluate a health policy issue of their own interest.
HADM 6390 Leadership in Healthcare Organizations
The purpose of this course is to guide and facilitate the development of the attitudes, practices and skills necessary for effective leadership within the health services industry, with an emphasis on the roles and functions of middle managers. Competencies and roles covered in the course include those related to critical thinking and analysis, professionalism, motivation, accountability, organizational awareness, conflict resolution, negotiation, innovation, change management, collaboration, influence and communication.
HADM 6088 Health Administration Internship
The health administration internship provides students the opportunity to acquire project-based work experience, while enriching the learning process through on-the-job application of concepts and techniques learned in the classroom. Students are required to spend 15 hours per week at the internship location under the supervision of a health executive preceptor. The internship is a required component of the health administration curriculum for students who do not have relevant health administration work experience; however, no credit is awarded.
HADM 6375 Healthcare Strategic Management
This course is designed to develop a basic understanding of why some healthcare firms or organizations are more successful than others. Strategic management explores how firms achieve competitive advantage (which leads to long-term success) in the context of single and multi-business firms. Drawing upon key strategic management theories, students will learn the essence of strategic analyses and decision-making in a competitive and constantly changing setting.
HADM 6315 Information Systems Management in Healthcare
This course introduces students to the fundamental principles of collecting and analyzing data for the production of information that supports clinical intervention, management operations, planning and decision-making within healthcare organizations. Studies focus on information technology and systems, including historical development, for conceptual understanding of the evolution from billing and financial reporting to newer broad-based information support applications in the delivery of healthcare. Emphasis is placed on the fundamental principles of collecting, managing and analyzing data for the production of information that supports improvements in cost and quality of health and medical care.
HADM 6088 Health Administration Internship
The health administration internship provides students the opportunity to acquire project-based work experience, while enriching the learning process through on-the-job application of concepts and techniques learned in the classroom. HADM 6340 Quality and Continuous Improvement in Healthcare
The purpose of this course is to guide and facilitate the development of the attitudes, practices and skills necessary for effective continuous improvement within healthcare organizations. After completion of the course students should understand the role and responsibilities of healthcare managers as they relate to quality, patient safety and continuous improvement and be able to apply the principles and tools of continuous improvement and safety as they pertain to the delivery of healthcare. Specifically, students should be able to analyze and improve organizational processes that impact patient care using the principles and tools related to safety and patient-centered continuous improvement.
HADM 6370 Healthcare Marketing
The rapidly changing technological, competitive, regulatory and reimbursement structures in the healthcare delivery environment today raise new and ever evolving challenges for healthcare organizations. Students are introduced to critical marketing concepts, techniques and strategies that enable organizations to better identify and serve their existing and newly targeted customers’ needs. This course builds upon the healthcare strategy course by focusing on the marketing strategy functions, including product development, pricing, advertising and promotions, distribution, consumer behavior and target market analysis. Students will develop a comprehensive marketing analysis and plan for a healthcare related product or service. Additionally, students will complete an individual pre-exit assessment in the form of a complex case analysis that integrates many of the Master of Health Administration program competencies.
HADM 6088 Health Administration Internship
The health administration internship provides students the opportunity to acquire project-based work experience, while enriching the learning process through on-the-job application of concepts and techniques learned in the classroom. Students are required to spend 15 hours per week at the internship location under the supervision of a health executive preceptor. The internship is a required component of the health administration curriculum for students who do not have relevant health administration work experience; however, no credit is awarded.
HADM 63CS Health Administration Capstone
This course provides students with the opportunity to synthesize an array of management principles and skills acquired during their MHA program by serving as a project management consultant to a local healthcare organization. Students work as part of a project team serving a client who has a specific organizational problem that needs to be addressed. The student teams collaborate with the organization to gather data and information and then they prepare a written report of their findings and present a verbal presentation of their recommendations to the organization's executive leadership. Additionally, as part of this course, students will individually complete the MHA program's Comprehensive Exit Assessment as the culminating assessment event of the program.
