Emmett Till: The Murder that Shocked the World & Propelled the Civil Rights Movement
San Antonio – The University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences is proud to present a public lecture by author and scholar Devery S. Anderson, author of Emmett Till: The Murder that Shocked the World and Propelled the Civil Rights Movement. The lecture is set for 7 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 13, in the UIW Concert Hall located at 4301 Broadway, 78209.
The book, published in 2015 by the University of Mississippi Press, is the definitive account of the murder of 14-year old Emmett Till in Mississippi, an event that is often credited as the "beginning" of the 20th Century Civil Rights Movement.
"The Emmett Till case is a milestone in the history of the Civil Rights Movement. Devery Anderson's account tells the complete story of what happened in the Mississippi Delta in the summer of 1955. This will be a special evening to be with the nation's foremost expert on this historic event,” said Dr. Roger Barnes, professor and chair – UIW Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice.
Emmett Till: The Murder that Shocked the World and Propelled the Civil Rights Movement tells the first truly comprehensive account of the 1955 lynching of an African- American boy from Chicago and its aftermath. The acquittal of the killers of 14 year old Emmett Till by an all-white jury set off a firestorm of protests that reverberated all over the world and spurred on the civil rights movement.
The lecture is free and open to the public. For more information, please contact the UIW College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences at (210) 829-3976.
