On Tuesday, Oct. 14, Campus Bajío celebrated its 10th Anniversary by hosting a gala on its beautiful campus in Irapuato, Guanajuato, Mexico. The gala brought together students, faculty, staff, Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, local dignitaries and many supporters to celebrate the community and all that has been accomplished since its establishment on June 2, 2015.
On Friday, Oct. 10, the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) renamed the Broadway Campus’ Student Engagement Center (SEC) Ballroom the Joeris Ballroom in honor of its cherished partners and friends, Maria Antonietta and Gary Joeris. Gary Joeris is the chairman and CEO of Joeris General Contractors and former UIW Trustee, who recently committed a generous gift of $500,000 toward the construction of Founders Hall.
The University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) is proud to announce the unveiling of the newly renamed Joeris Ballroom. The event space in the Student Engagement Center on the UIW Broadway campus is now named in honor of Maria and Gary Joeris, chairman and CEO of Joeris General Contractors and former longtime UIW Trustee.

On Thursday, Oct. 2, the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) hosted the 34th President of Colombia Iván Duque Márquez. The Liza and Jack Lewis Center of the Americas welcomed Duque Márquez as their latest speaker who presented on the promise of cross-border cooperation and humanistic leadership in the Americas as part of their “Leaders of the Americas Speaker Series.”
The Ila Faye Miller School of Nursing and Health Professions (SNHP) at the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) is honored to welcome Jean Watson, PhD, RN, AHN-BC, FAAN, LL (AAN) as this year’s featured speaker for the annual Sr. Charles Marie Frank Endowed Lecture. Dr. Watson will present a lecture entitled “Unitary Caring Science: A Full Circle of Knowledge” at the UIW McCombs Center Rosenberg Sky Room on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, at 5 p.m.
October 6, 2025 – The University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) is proud to announce that students participating in the Communication Arts Department UIWtv program garnered an impressive 14 Lone Star EMMY Student Production Awards nominations. That number by far exceeds every university in the state this year.
Last year, UIW announced the Dreeben School of Education’s recognition as a Charles Butt Foundation partner program. This year, the second cohort of Charles Butt Scholars is comprised of eight students, including three returning students and five new scholars.
On Wednesday, Oct. 1, students from the Doctor of Occupational Therapy (DOT) and Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) programs from SRS were joined by Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) students from St. Philip’s College and Physical Therapy Assistant (PTA) students from Concorde Career College on the UIW Broadway Campus for a Rehab Team Event. The day offered a variety of activities for students to participate in, educating and challenging them on how to best approach patient care in the field.

September 22, 2025 – The University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) is proud to announce that the UIW Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry program has been granted continued approval by the American Chemical Society (ACS) Committee on Professional Training (CPT) following the program’s 2025 periodic review. The ACS approval is the national standard of excellence for chemistry programs, affirming UIW’s commitment to providing students with high-quality preparation for careers in science, medicine, industry and education.
September 19, 2025 – The University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) is proud to announce that it has been recognized as one of the best universities to work for in the nation according to a new survey by the “Great Colleges to Work For” program. This marks the 17th consecutive year that UIW has made the national list. The results of the “Great Colleges to Work For” survey are collected by the independent company Modern Think and released today in a special insert of The Chronicle of Higher Education.
On Sunday, Sept. 14, the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW), in collaboration with the Interfaith San Antonio Alliance (ISAA), hosted the 2nd annual Festival of Faiths on the Broadway campus. This unique event welcomed hundreds of people to both share and learn about the various faith systems present in the San Antonio community.
Each year, from September 15 to October 15, the United States observes Hispanic Heritage Month, honoring the history, culture and contributions of the Hispanic and Latino community that have helped shape—and continue to shape—the nation. In celebration, the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) has planned a variety of engaging events. These gatherings provide opportunities for the community to experience and embrace the vibrant tapestry of Hispanic and Latino cultures across UIW campuses (uiw.edu).

On Thursday, Aug. 4, UIW’s Behavioral Health Services hosted its “Taco-bout Mental Health” event in honor of Suicide Awareness Month on the Broadway Campus. The annual event presents an opportunity for students, faculty, staff and community members to become more knowledgeable about aspects related to mental health while simultaneously enjoying delicious street tacos provided by local food truck Tacos al Cabron Cabron.
Every year, the University of the Incarnate Word’s Broadway campus transforms into a winter wonderland during its much-anticipated Light the Way Holiday Festival. This annual event invites thousands of San Antonio residents to experience the “millions of twinkling lights” that illuminate the campus, ushering the joyous Christmas season. However, this event wouldn’t be possible without the help of UIW student volunteers.
On Saturday, Aug. 6, the UIW School of Osteopathic Medicine (UIWSOM) honored the Class of 2029 at their annual White Coat Ceremony at the Boeing Tech Port. This ceremony signifies the beginning of student doctors’ academic journeys at UIWSOM. As they progress through the next four years of their education, they will grow into the next generation of exemplary health professionals who will heal their neighbors.
Welcome Week on the UIW Broadway campus is an exciting opportunity to greet new and returning students as a new academic year begins. Throughout the week of Monday, Aug. 25 to Saturday, Aug. 30, various engaging events are coordinated for students to enjoy as they embrace their Cardinal pride.
On Tuesday, Sept. 2, the UIW School of Osteopathic Medicine (UIWSOM) unveiled an exciting new addition. A 55-kW solar system was installed on top of the Brooks campus library in an effort to provide renewable energy to the UIWSOM campus. This project was executed with the collaboration of UIW’s Sustainability Advisory Board (SAB) and Big Sun Solar, a company that “helps companies, nonprofits and municipalities with facilities in Texas meet carbon reduction goals and gain financial returns by transitioning to solar energy.”
The University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) is advancing its commitment to sustainability with the commissioning of a new rooftop solar system on its UIW School of Osteopathic Medicine library at Brooks. The installation, completed by San Antonio-based Big Sun Solar, is expected to generate more than 81,982 kilowatt-hours of clean energy annually, offsetting nearly 8% of the library’s electricity use.
Since opening in 2013, the UIW Bowden Eye Care and Health Center has served as a “multidisciplinary teaching environment equipped to provide comprehensive health care to underserved populations of our community.” Additionally, the UIW Eye Institute, located at the Rosenberg School of Optometry (RSO), is a state-of-the-art clinic equipped with some of the most advanced imaging technology for diagnosing eye disease (optometry.uiw.edu). Generations of ocular professionals have been prepared to serve the community at RSO and its affiliates facilities, and this academic year is no different.
This month, Enrique Gómez Jackson ’25 was recognized as the first-place winner for Viasat’s 2025 Space for Good challenge. Viasat, a global technology company specializing in satellite communications, launched their Space for Good challenge welcoming students to pitch projects that seek to “tackle real-world space sustainability problems” for the chance to win cash prizes to fund their idea (viasat.springpod.com). Jackson was one of this year’s many participating applicants, yet it was ultimately his idea that won. The stellar concept, a smart bracelet that helps locate, identify and save lives of those involved in natural disasters, received top recognition and $15,000 in funding.
On Friday, Aug. 8, the UIW Feik School of Pharmacy (FSOP) hosted it’s 20th White Coat Ceremony in the McCombs Center Rosenberg Sky Room. This annual event celebrates first-year pharmacy students who are embarking on their journeys to become the best quality pharmacy professionals who will one day serve others in need.
The start of a new academic year ushers in an exciting time on all of our UIW campuses, but particularly here on the UIW Broadway campus as new and returning Cardinals flock to the Nest as residents. On Thursday, Aug. 21 through Sunday, Aug. 24, the campus experienced one of its largest anticipated move-ins with approximately 1,175 students choosing to call UIW their “home away from home.”
The goal for Mariana Barron Esper, BA '19, no matter where life takes her, is to evoke peace, love and faith in the people she comes across. Her primary vessel for doing so is her music, which has been nominated for the International Catholic Music Awards, presented by the Vatican.
Much like UIW, many families take pride in the core values that guide their homes and communities. They raise their children with the hope that these principles will be passed down and lived out, just as they have been before. For Marissa Watters, a 2020 and 2022 UIW alumna, these values have been a constant compass, shaping the path that has led her to where she is today.

Harrison is a Professor of Management in the H-E-B School of Business and Administration (HEBSBA) at UIW. She also serves as Co-Director of the UIW Beckendorf Family Center for Innovation and Global Entrepreneurship.
August 13, 2025 – The University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) is proud to welcome Tila K. Jernigan to the role of Senior Director of Military and Veterans Affairs. Jernigan brings over 20 years of dedicated service to the military-connected community, including 13 years in higher education. A military spouse herself, she brings both personal insight and professional leadership to her new role at UIW.
After years of development and accreditation, the institution’s science program has now evolved into the University of the Incarnate Word’s School of Mathematics, Science and Engineering (SMSE). One of SMSE’s remarkable students is senior Mechatronics Engineering major Gabriella “Gabby” Luna.
The University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) is proud to announce Dr. Adam Watkins’ promotion to Dean of the School of Media and Design. Watkins served as Assistant Dean there for the past three years and joined UIW in 2000.
The Broadway campus falls silent during the summer season as Cardinals have flocked back home to relax and recharge for their summer vacations. Although students have yet to return to the Nest for the new academic year, the UIW Admissions team has been hard at work welcoming UIW’s latest class of incoming students – the Graduating Class of 2029.
August 4, 2025 - This fall, the University of the Incarnate Word School of Professional Studies (UIW SPS) will launch “Cognitive Bias and Applied Decision Making in Healthcare” and “Cognitive Bias and Applied Decision Making in Artificial Intelligence,” two new continuing education courses designed to help professionals recognize and respond to the hidden forces shaping clinical decisions and system outcomes.
The University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) is proud to announce that the U.S. Department of Education has awarded UIW a federal TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) grant totaling more than $1.4 million. The grant will be used over the next five years to improve college retention and graduation rates among low-income, first-generation students and students with disabilities.
On Monday, July 21, a celebration was held in honor of launching the first paid internship program between UIW’s Ila Faye Miller School of Nursing and Health Professions (SNHP) and the CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Heath System. The vision of the UIW-CHRISTUS paid nursing internship program is to simultaneously prepare nursing students for real-world excellence, while deepening the mission-driven partnership between UIW and CHRISTUS.

Dr. Veronica Martinez-Acosta, professor of Biology, was recently recognized by the Society for the Advancement of Chicano and Native American Scientists (SACNAS) as their 2024 Outstanding College/University Mentor. SACNAS is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to help Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans be successful in the world of STEM.
The University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) is proud to announce that, for the fifth straight year, it has been recognized by the national organization, Colleges of Distinction. UIW has been named a College of Distinction, a prestigious designation awarded to schools whose commitment to engaged, experiential education sets them apart. This June, the ECCLS invited a group of seven UIW students to participate in their annual trip to the Rio Grande Valley as part of its work with ARISE Adelante, a nonprofit organization that empowers and supports immigrants in low-income communities in South Texas in their journey of creating a better life for themselves and their loved ones. UIW has collaborated with ARISE since 2015 and has consistently returned to help support the organization’s mission.
On Thursday, June 5, Tracy Avery was celebrated as the next recipient of the exclusive Order of Merit award as part of the 2025 UIW Athletics Hall of Fame. This honor is given to a notable individual that has “made (a) significant contribution(s) to the advancement of the intercollegiate athletics program at UIW” (uiwcardinals.com/sports).
This Spring, UIW welcomed Executive Officer for the Chief of Chaplains at the United States Army Headquarters Department of the Army Pentagon, Chaplain Colonel Primitivo Davis, as he led the pilot of a Moral Leadership Symposium. This first-time symposium was hosted at the Broadway campus in the hopes of initiating conversations surrounding how one can take charge while considering morality.
This Juneteenth, the social justice advocates of UIW’s student-led group “As One We Will” (AOWW) were invited by the San Antonio African American Community Archive and Museum (SAAACAM) to participate in the “Green Book Civil Right Bus Tour.” This tour takes place in historic east side neighborhoods and offers an opportunity for participants to “uncover the stories of African American entrepreneurship, resilience, community and travel” (saaacam.org).

The University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) is proud to have played host to the 2025 graduation celebrations of both St. Anthony Catholic High School (SACHS) and Incarnate Word High School (IWHS) in separate ceremonies on May 24, 2025. Thousands of family members, friends, faculty and staff gathered at the Alice P. McDermott Convocation Center on the UIW Broadway campus for the momentous occasion. Both SACHS and IWHS are part of the UIW Brainpower Connection, a collaboration of five schools within the Archdiocese of San Antonio that establishes pathways from pre-k to college.
In honor of the Spring 2025 health professions graduates, a number of ceremonies were hosted to celebrate their accomplishments.
With another school year coming to a close also comes the celebration for the latest generation of graduating Cardinals. Each graduate, no matter how different their fields of study or walks of life are, will be embodiments of the Word living in the world as they continue to share the teachings and love of Jesus Christ, the Incarnate Word of God. Before their departure from the Nest, the University’s community gathered together to celebrate the accomplishments of the Class of Spring 2025.
The University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) has been a top-ranked institution for military and veteran students, having been voted “Best for Vets” by Military Times for two consecutive years. With the extensive efforts made by the Military and Veteran Center, UIW is able to provide and expand opportunities that support all service members who are serving and who have served to protect the rights and freedoms of our country. One of these notable military-affiliated students is Spring 2025 graduate, Jessica “Jay” Andrade.

Making the decision to pursue a college degree can be daunting but also immensely fulfilling. Being the first in one’s family to earn a college degree can make this achievement all the more significant. These first-time graduates serve as examples to their loved ones of their capabilities to lead their own chosen lives. For the Jimenez family, the achievement of being first-generation graduates is one that spans two generations.
The University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) presently has five health professions schools: Feik School of Pharmacy, Ila Faye Miller School of Nursing and Health Professions, Rosenberg School of Optometry, School of Rehabilitation Sciences and School of Osteopathic Medicine (UIWSOM). One of these remarkable future healthcare practitioners is Denise Vera Nemeth, a UIWSOM Spring 2025 graduate.

On Tuesday, March 18, UIW had the privilege of welcoming San Antonio artists Kathy and Lionel Sosa to the Broadway Campus to discuss their recently released documentary Al Otro Lado del Espejo, which explores the significance of San Antonio's missions, and the relationship shared between San Antonio and the city of Querétaro, Mexico.

The award was announced during the 125th Texas Optometric Association Annual Summit held in Austin in February.
On Thursday, Feb. 27, UIW hosted its third annual African and Afro-Caribbean Fashion Show in the Student Engagement Center ballroom. UIW’s International Student and Scholar Services, Ettling Center for Civic Leadership and Sustainability and the African Student Organization (ASO) hosted this yearly event in celebration of Black History Month. On Friday, Feb. 28, the UIW School of Media and Design had much to celebrate as 23 of its Graphic Design students were recognized with awards and scholarships at the 2024 American Advertising Awards, hosted by AAF San Antonio. “The American Advertising Awards honor innovation, excellence and the bold ideas that shape our city’s advertising landscape. This year’s theme, Keep It SA, pays tribute to the vibrant culture and creative spirit that make San Antonio truly one of a kind” (adfedsa.org).
On Thursday, March 7, the UIW Ila Faye Miller School of Nursing and Health Professions (SNHP) hosted its annual Sr. Margaret Mary (Lucilla) Lecture in the McCombs Center Rosenberg Sky Room. This yearly event welcomes educators and students from the Nursing program to present their original research during poster presentations and to listen to a distinguished Nursing guest speaker.
On Friday, Feb. 28, University of the Incarnate Word President Dr. Thomas M. Evans swore in John B. Catts III as UIWPD's Chief of Police. The UIW Police Department has served the UIW Community for nearly 32 years.
On Saturday, Feb. 15, UIW hosted the annual Red Dress Fashion Show. Since 2006, garments designed by Fashion students have been showcased at this vibrant event. In addition to UIW and San Antonio community members getting to witness the talents of the University’s students, they also got the opportunity to learn about women’s heart health.
On Thursday, Feb. 13, UIW President Dr. Thomas M. Evans and Mrs. Lisa Evans unveiled the Evans Family Faculty Lounge in the J.E. & L.E. Mabee Library on the Broadway campus. The lounge, which was funded by Dr. and Mrs. Evans, was dedicated to the UIW faculty in honor of their commitment to the University’s students, including their son.

On Monday, Feb. 17, students and faculty gathered in the SEC Ballroom to listen to a lecture given by guest speaker Dr. Izzeldin Abuelaish. Abuelaish is an intentionally recognized human rights advocate whose continued work has led him to be a five-time Nobel Peace Prize nominee and a recipient of various humanitarian awards.
On Sunday, Feb. 9, Alumni Relations and Mission and Ministry celebrated the couples whose love originated at the University with the annual Cardinal Couples Mass in Our Lady’s Chapel. The lovebirds were welcomed back to the Nest to prayerfully rejoice in their continued love for their partners and for the University that brought them together.
In February 1950, the first ever Stock Show and Rodeo was hosted in San Antonio, Texas. This now annual event, which “emphasizes agriculture and education to develop the youth of Texas” has become a staple of the city’s culture (SARodeo.com). UIW students and faculty hosted several events to ring in the rodeo season, bringing San Antonio culture right to campus.
The University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) is honored to announce that Ben Rueger has been named the University’s new Chief Information Officer and Vice President of Innovation and Technology. Rueger comes to UIW from the Purdue University system.
