UIW CARES Act Funding headed to Students
University has Distributed Over 90% of $2.6 Million in Emergency Funds
San Antonio – May 14, 2020 – The University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) has announced it has already disbursed more than $2 million in funds from the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act to more than 4,500 current eligible students. The funds are part of the $2,609,844 received by the University from the CARES Act for direct student grants. The Federal CARES Act funds are intended to provide financial support to students who are eligible to receive Title IV aid based on FAFSA requirements.
“UIW is committed to the success of our students and recognized the opportunity to financially support our students by participating in the CARES Act,” says Chief Financial Officer & Vice President for Administrative Services Dr. Darrell Haydon. “UIW moved quickly to get CARES Act funding into the hands of our students. We applied for the funds on 4/10/20, received the funds on 4/20/20, and began disbursing the funds to students by 4/29/20. We have distributed over 90% of the funds, and we still have $207,987 available to support future student requests.”
Current eligible students enrolled in Spring 2020 with 12-plus hours received $400 and those enrolled in less than 12 hours received $300. Students could then apply for additional costs associated with COVID-19.
The CARES Act directs institutions to use funds received under the act to provide emergency financial aid grants to students for expenses related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Those expenses include but are not limited to food, housing, health care, childcare, technology, and course materials. Eligibility requirements include but are not limited to U.S. citizenship or eligible non-citizens, a valid Social Security number, registration with Selective Services, and a high school diploma, GED, or completed high school in an approved homeschool setting.
