University of the Incarnate Word set to Celebrate Women’s History Month
March Calendar Brings Ten Major Events
San Antonio – Feb. 27, 2020 - Highlighted by an award-winning author, a wellness fair, and a day of community service, the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) is set to celebrate Women’s History Month.
The 2020 theme of UIW Women’s History Month celebrates the women who have fought for woman’s right to vote in the United States. In recognition of the centennial of the 19th Amendment, we will honor women from the original suffrage movement as well as 20th and 21st - century women who have continued the struggle (fighting against poll taxes, literacy tests, voter roll purges and other more contemporary forms of voter suppression) to ensure voting rights for all.
Among the many events is a presentation from Caldecott Award-winning author Juana Martinez-Neal who will speak at the Mabee Library Auditorium at 6 p.m., Tuesday, March 3. She will be discussing her semi-autobiographical book, Alma and How She Got Her Name, which has the message that "we are everyone that came before us, and at the same time we are uniquely ourselves." Martinez-Neal, a Peruvian-American, also just illustrated Fry Bread: A Native American Family Story in 2019 and La Princesa and the Pea in 2017. Please join Women's and Gender Studies and the English Department for this special UIW Women's History Month event.
