Teacher Education Faculty Member to Present at International Literacy Conference
< Dr. Stephanie Grote-Garcia, professor of Teacher Education in the Dreeben School of Education, will present at the 22nd European Conference on Literacy in Dublin, Ireland this summer. The conference, planned for July 4-6, brings together scholars and educators to discuss literacy teaching and research. Grote-Garcia will deliver a presentation derived from her extensive research titled, “Trends and Issues in Literacy Instruction: What We Have Learned From 25 Years of the What’s Hot in Literacy Survey.”
“I am very excited to be presenting my sabbatical research, which analyzed 25 years of interview data,” shared Grote-Garcia. “This will be my first-time presenting my research internationally, and I am looking forward to it.”
The conference is co-hosted by the Federation of European Literacy Association and The Literacy Association of Ireland; both organizations are connected to the International Literacy Association.
Grote-Garcia, co-author of the annual “What’s Hot in Literacy Survey,” has collected interviews with literacy leaders for 25 years. Among them are board members of influential literacy associations (e.g., The International Literacy Association and the Association for Literacy Educators and Researchers), editors of leading literacy journals (e.g., The Reading Teacher, Reading Research Quarterly, and Literacy Research and Instruction) and professionals serving in various literacy leadership roles (e.g., professors, K-12 educators, literacy specialists/coaches and administrators). She will present the longitudinal data for the “What’s Hot in Literacy” survey, with a focus on literacy trends captured by the annual publication.
Grote-Garcia is a certified Reading Specialist and Master Reading Teacher. Prior to working in higher education, she taught struggling elementary readers in Texas public schools. She is former president of the Specialized Literacy Professionals and co-founder of the Texas Association for Literacy Education (TALE). Grote-Garcia also currently serves on the Resource Board for the Special Olympics Region 20.
