UIW Hosts Around the World Multicultural Fair
On Wednesday, Sept 18, UIW hosted the Around the World Multicultural Fair in the Student Engagement Center (SEC) Ballroom. Presented by the World Affairs Council of San Antonio, the event welcomed attendees to enjoy food, dance and music performers from around the globe and provided the opportunity to converse with representatives from 37 countries.
The World Affairs Council of San Antonio has worked closely with UIW for several years to bring events such as this one to campus in fulfillment of their mission to promote public understanding of world affairs and United States foreign policy.
Armen Babajanian, chief executive officer of the World Affairs Council of San Antonio, shared that this event is a great opportunity for guests to learn more about diverse cultures, histories, art and food.
“Every day, we are inundated with mostly negative news from around the world. This event provides our guests—including local San Antonians and students—with the opportunity to truly engage with other cultures, fostering meaningful conversations rather than relying on 15-second soundbites,” shared Babajanian. “Ultimately, it encourages greater empathy and understanding toward different cultures.”
Attending guests visited tables representing countries including France, Slovakia, Panama, Cameroon, Japan and many more.
“The University of the Incarnate Word and the World Affairs Council of San Antonio share a strong, collaborative partnership, continuously working together to bring diverse events, speakers and relevant global topics to the forefront,” shared Marco Fragoso, vice president for UIW International Affairs and World Affairs Council of San Antonio board member. “This collaboration not only enriches the members of the Council but also provides invaluable opportunities for our students and the entire UIW community to engage with the world beyond the classroom.”
Julie Weber, senior director of Enrollment Services, also noted that, “UIW is an active supporter of the World Affairs Council because it mirrors our Mission that welcomes to our community persons of diverse backgrounds, in the belief that their respectful interaction advances the discovery of truth, mutual understanding, self-realization and the common good.”
The Around the World Multicultural Fair not only celebrated global diversity but also reinforced UIW's commitment to its core values of Education and Truth. As participants enjoyed the vibrant array of cultures, the event served as a reminder of the importance of collaboration and dialogue in today’s interconnected world.
