UIW Dedicates Spirit Bell in Honor of Robert C. Crosby

November 1, 2024

On Tuesday, Oct. 29, UIW hosted the dedication of the Robert C. Crosby Spirit Bell, named in honor and memory of UIW’s cherished friend who passed on June 6, 2022.

Robert and his wife Kate Crosby, a UIW '96 alumna, have been longtime friends and advocates of the University. They played a key role in establishing the Quarterback Club, which evolved into today’s Cardinals Club. Their leadership was instrumental in shaping the football tailgate experience and building community support for UIW football in the early years of the program.

For their efforts, Kate and Robert were recognized in 2023 as the first recipients of the UIW Athletics Hall of Fame Order of Merit award, which is presented to individuals who have made a significant contribution to the advancement of intercollegiate athletics at the University.

The installation of the bell at Gayle and Tom Benson Stadium signifies the start of a new UIW tradition, as it will be rung in celebration after each Cardinals touchdown. Although the bell carries Robert's name, his support and dedication to UIW were always a joint effort with Kate.

“He (Robert) loved the school so much,” remarked Kate. “He wanted to bring some recognition to the school, something that people will remember that was unique.”

With his enthusiasm in mind, the Spirit Bell was created as a way to recognize the victories brought upon the school by UIW Athletics. Although Robert didn’t see his idea become a reality, his friends, family and loved ones find that the concept and execution of the victory bell achieves Robert’s vision.

“Robert had a dream that we could create a spirit bell that could start a tradition that could carry on for the next generations,” shared Rick Smith, UIW Development Board member and friend of the Crosbys. “I was happy to be able to work with Brian Scislo (senior director of Development for Special Projects) and make that dream a reality for Robert and Kate. I am so excited to see it come to fruition. Traditions begin and continue when good people get together.”

In addition to advancing UIW Athletics, this bell acknowledges Robert and Kate’s significant contributions to raising funds for student scholarships as members of the institution’s Development Board.

“Robert and Kate Crosby got involved with UIW serving as members of the Development Board, which was created to help provide scholarships for our students,” explained Sr. Kathleen Coughlin, CCVI. “Robert took an interest in all things Incarnate Word College and UIW, helping to spread the word of our Mission, to raise money for the various projects we had undertaken and scholarships for our students. For the many efforts he contributed over his four years on the board, we dedicate our spirit bell in his memory and on behalf of the individuals through the years who have been members of the Development Board.”

In honor of the three Sisters who founded the University of the Incarnate Word, the Robert C. Crosby Spirit Bell will ring three times in celebration of every UIW touchdown. Following each game, the Spirit Bell will ring once in remembrance of Robert. The bell not only commemorates a significant legacy, but also inspires this year’s Homecoming theme: "Let Your Spirit Ring!”
