Loves Takes Flight: UIW Hosts Annual Cardinal Couples Mass

February 14, 2025

On Sunday, Feb. 9, Alumni Relations and Mission and Ministry celebrated the couples whose love originated at the University with the annual Cardinal Couples Mass in Our Lady’s Chapel. The lovebirds were welcomed back to the Nest to prayerfully rejoice in their continued love for their partners and for the University that brought them together.

“It was so nice to see UIW couples, young and old, come together and reminisce on their time here at UIW,” said Clarissa Guana, Alumni Relations manager.

Attendees were serenaded with the harmonious talents of UIW choir members, under the direction of William Gokelman, and were led in prayer by Fr. Benny Kupangula Lipalata. Each couple was prayed over by all in attendance who asked God to continue to guide them as they continue to strengthen their Christ-centered relationships.

“An important part of this Mass is extending a blessing to our engaged and married couples in attendance,” shared Lena Gokelman, director of Music Ministries and Liturgy. “Personally, I love when our alumni and students can worship together. On a day like this one, we get to see the common thread of our community desiring to know God more deeply through their relationships with each other. It is both a day of witness and, for those who are dating, a season of opportunity from God to take the time to be present to one another - building upon their friendship, finding opportunities to pray together and trusting that God is leading them always.”

The event concluded with the UIW community enjoying a spread of tasty treats, including coffee, lemonade and Valentine’s Day cookies!
