UIW Brings the Rodeo to the Nest

February 14, 2025

In February 1950, the first ever Stock Show and Rodeo was hosted in San Antonio, Texas. This now annual event, which “emphasizes agriculture and education to develop the youth of Texas” has become a staple of the city’s culture (SARodeo.com). UIW students and faculty hosted several events to ring in the rodeo season, bringing San Antonio culture right to campus.

On Wednesday, Feb. 5, Residence Life hosted “Cardinal Stampede,” its annual rodeo-themed event. Students gathered in Westgate Circle to enjoy games, food and prizes, including tickets to the 2025 Stock Show and Rodeo.

“The overall purpose of Cardinal Stampede is to foster school spirit, build community and create an exciting, energetic atmosphere that brings students together,” said Brand Saldivar, Residence Life coordinator. “This unifying event celebrates the theme of the rodeo, encourages student involvement and enhances the overall campus experience.”

This year, 230 attendees came dressed in their best cowgirl and cowboy attire, sporting western boots, hats, belts, bandanas and more. Channeling their Texas pride, students tried their hand in mechanical bull riding and sang their hearts out to well-known country songs during karaoke. It was a fun-filled evening that brought the energy of the Stock Show and Rodeo to the corner of Broadway and Hildebrand.

On Thursday, Feb. 13, the University’s dedicated faculty and staff joined in the fun by enjoying their own Cowboy Breakfast in front of the Kelso Art Center. Despite the cold temperatures, employees gathered to enjoy a warm breakfast, show off their best Western attire and connect with one another.

“We get to have a rodeo period here in San Antonio and get the opportunity to attend one of the best rodeos in the United States,” noted Dr. Thomas Evans, president of UIW, in remarks during the breakfast. “Speaking of best in the United States, I know we're one of the best places in the United States to study and learn, and that's because of you all … Thank you to all who make this such a beautiful campus, and a great place to call home and an alma mater. Thank you for what you do for our students, inside and outside of the classroom in order to make the Nest a great choice for our students and for their families.”

The morning was filled with excitement as guests participated in a number of activities. Even Red the Cardinal joined, greeting guests in a vest and cowboy hat.

Let’s Rodeo, UIW!
