UIWSOM Celebrates Soon-to-Be Doctors During Match Day 2025
On Friday, March 21, medical schools across the nation celebrated Match Day, the day when the National Resident Matching Program releases results to applicants seeking residency and fellowship training positions in the United States.
The UIW School of Osteopathic Medicine (UIWSOM) was proud to participate in this national celebration as they welcomed 150 medical students to Hanger 9 to receive the results of the residency placements. Many medical students had the opportunity to share this momentous occasion with their fellow students, mentors, family, friends and more.
“Soon-to-be doctors, this is your moment,” opened John T. Pham, dean of UIWSOM. “Today is a day of celebration, marking the culmination of years of dedication, perseverance and effort. The moment you’ve been counting down to has finally arrived as you step into the next chapter of your medical career.”
Tears welled in the eyes of the UIWSOM students and their loved ones as they listened to Pham’s speech. For many, Match Day presents a variety of possibilities as they prepare to begin their residency, but one thing that is for certain is that they are one step closer to being the next generations of healing professionals.
Pham encouraged students to embrace the challenges that come with their residency programs, as this will help them develop essential qualities such as courage and humility.
“The difference you will make will extend far beyond the patients you care for,” said Pham. “Your compassion, dedication and expertise will inspire others, uplift families and contribute to advancing healthcare in ways you may not yet imagine. Your chosen specialties will not only challenge you but also enable you to leave a profound and lasting legacy in medicine … Now, go forward with confidence, serve with compassion, and make a difference in the lives of countless people.”
The hanger erupted into cheers and applause as students held up their Match Day signs, presenting the results of their placed residency programs and medical specialties. Many students rushed to their friends and family, embracing them with excitement and pride in their results.
This year, 100% of UIWSOM students placed in a residency program and placed in 16 different specialties including urology, ophthalmology, otolaryngology, orthopedic surgery and thoracic surgery. 60% of students matched to primary specialties, and 59.5% of students matched to a Texas-based residency program.
“The feeling was unreal!” shared Christian Allen, UIWSOM student who matched to Orthopedic Surgery at HCA Florida Largo/University of South Florida Orthopedic Surgery. “We, as medical students, work so hard over the course of four years to build our knowledge, sculpt our networks with physicians and mentors and miss time with family and friends, all in the pursuit of becoming the best possible physicians we can be for our future patients in our chosen specialties. All of the time, tears and sweat build to one day: Match Day! As a student who accomplished my goal of getting into the specialty and residency that I wanted, I can say that there was no feeling like it. The tears of joy, hugs with family and friends, and ultimately, the feeling that my hard work has paid off will live with me forever. I praise God for the ways He helped get me here!”
During his residency, Allen looks forward to building his confidence and deepening his training so that he is capable of handling any challenge that he may encounter as a healthcare professional. He also hopes to build new relationships and to explore a new part of the country with his beloved wife.
Congratulations to the 2025 matched students!
