One in every four UIW students is international; they come to the United States, and to UIW, for various reasons. For Lars Willems, a Netherlands national who graduates on Saturday with his MBA (concentration in Finance), the initial connection was through the UIW men’s soccer program. Willems remembers that choosing UIW “just felt very good from the beginning.”

Attending a conference about leadership is an excellent opportunity to do just that, so when Brittnay Hernandez, a graduate student in accounting, had the opportunity to travel to Pittsburg for the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA) Student Leadership Conference, she jumped at it.

According to Dr. Trish Driskill, associate professor of Accounting in the H-E-B School of Business and Administration (HEBSBA), their recent networking reception and career fair was “extremely successful.” During the event, hosted by HEBSBA and Career Services in the McCombs Center Rosenberg Sky Room, 164 HEBSBA students had the opportunity to meet with 65 companies.

Assistant Professor of Management Information Systems Dr. Yi Liu, in the UIW H-E-B School of Business and Administration, has published his manuscript “Connecting Perceived Effectiveness of App Evolution to App Engagement: A Technology Identity Perspective” in Information Technology and People (ITP). Liu worked with co-authors Dr. Xinlin Tang (Florida State University), Peigong Li (Shanghai Lixin University of Accounting and Finance), and Xuan Wang, (University of Texas Rio Grande Valley) on the paper.

VITA Program Returns to UIW

UIW is pleased to announce the return of the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, or VITA, program. The program provides free tax preparation services from IRS certified volunteers to households with incomes of $58,000 or less and helps working families take advantage of all of the tax credits that they are eligible for. The VITA program engages UIW faculty and student volunteers from the UIW H-E-B School of Business and Administration (HEBSBA) help prepare basic, current year tax returns for these eligible taxpayers at no charge.

Dr. Michael McGuire spent 31 years as a professor of economics at the University of the Incarnate Word. He and his wife, Patience, also a retired educator, have established the Dr. Mike McGuire Scholarship Endowment for Mission-Inspired Business Leadership. The $300,000 endowment will allow for a $10,000 scholarship to be awarded to one business student every year. Recipients of this scholarship must not only show accomplishment in the classroom, but a true understanding of the Mission of UIW.
