UIWSOM Attends Osteopathic Medical Education Conference 2024
The American Osteopathic Association hosted its annual Osteopathic Medical Education Conference, OMED, in San Antonio from Thursday, Sept. 19, through Sunday, Sept. 22. The event brought together thousands of osteopathic physicians, medical students and other health professionals from across the country, providing valuable networking opportunities and insights from guest speakers and leaders in the field of osteopathic medicine.
Students and faculty members from the UIW School of Osteopathic Medicine (UIWSOM) attended the conference to expand their medical community and take advantage of professional development opportunities.
UIWSOM members heard inspirational guest speakers such as NASA physician James D. Polk, DO, pro basketball legend Tamika Catchings and awarding winning media personality Montel Williams.
“OMED 2024 was a vibrant celebration that showcased the heart and soul of the osteopathic community, right in the welcoming embrace of San Antonio,” shared Dr. John Pham, UIWSOM dean and chief academic officer. “As medical colleges and specialty groups gathered, the atmosphere buzzed with opportunity and collaboration, reflecting the spirit of UIWSOM. Our students had the chance to engage with prospective colleagues, forging connections that will undoubtedly shape their professional journeys.”
In addition to attending, UIWSOM hosted a booth at the OMED exhibitor fair where attendees met UIWSOM faculty and staff, learned more about the institution and were welcomed to take photos with UIWSOM’s Day of the Dead Sugar Skull sculpture and UIW mascot Red the Cardinal.
UIWSOM’s Mobile Osteopathic Medicine (MOM) unit was also on site, showcasing the school’s unique capability to deliver healthcare services throughout the city. Originally established in partnership with the Moody Foundation, the MOM unit brings essential medical care, including osteopathic care, immunizations and health screenings to local San Antonio communities.
“The event radiated enthusiasm, and it was a true honor to serve as hosts, highlighting not only our commitment to medical excellence but also the warmth and camaraderie that define our community,” expressed Dr. Pham. “This remarkable gathering was more than just a conference; it was a testament to the strength and unity of the osteopathic profession and the Cardinal pride.”
Dr. Pham expressed gratitude to the entire UIW Broadway campus marketing teams for their collaborative efforts in promoting and supporting the event, ensuring its success.
