Teach Abroad
To further the Department of Study Abroad's goal of fostering cross-cultural competencies through curriculum, our team facilitates international experiences for UIW faculty and supports their professional endeavors abroad. We welcome faculty to enhance their professional journey through virtual team teaching and guest lecturing, teaching at UIW-Strasbourg or a Sister School, or conducting a sabbatical abroad!
Department Mission
The University of the Incarnate Word’s (UIW) Department of Study Abroad, which includes the Office of Sister School Partnerships and the Study Abroad Office, provides meaningful service to UIW’s diverse student, faculty and staff community by:
- Fostering cross-cultural competencies through curriculum which includes (with*) global perspectives and an emphasis on social justice.
- Engaging students and faculty in intentional international opportunities such as the exchange of students, scholars, research and innovative ideas.
- Building strategic partnerships across UIW’s campuses, San Antonio, and the globe, especially those in the Americas.
Teach Abroad Opportunities
Many UIW Sister Schools welcome visiting scholars such as guest lecturers and team teachers to enhance their classrooms and internationalizes the curriculum. International team teaching and guest lecturing foster UIW’s mission statement on liberal learning, which prizes curiosity and seeks to expand boundaries. Exposure to diverse viewpoints, instructional styles, and international collaboration, fosters cross-cultural competencies in the classroom.

UIW-Strasbourg Summer Faculty Application
The UIW European Summer Faculty Selection Committee and Application was established to provide guidance and support for UIW faculty wishing to teach at UIW-Strasbourg during summer terms I and/or II. The selection committee’s primary objective is to offer guidance and support, while ensuring faculty receive the benefit of a collaborative team environment when developing and implementing their approved course promotional strategy.
In an effort to support faculty wishing to teach at the center, the selection committee will review applications with a specific focus of addressing academic topics common to international study abroad programs, mitigating foreseeable issues and challenges, and collaborating efforts to implement a mutually agreeable promotional strategy to advertise the approved course(s). The committee is under no obligation to approve the faculty’s application; however, will ensure faculty have all of the necessary information and support to help guide them through the application process.
Timeline: Applications should be submitted no later than one year prior to the scheduled arrival day.
Eligibility Requirements:
- UIW faculty
- Dean Approval Form
- Valid Passport or Proof of Passport Application (Passport must be valid two years after the intended return)
A completed application form consists of:
- Dean Approval Form (page 3 of 4)
- Copy of a Valid Passport
- Copy of course syllabus and outline (Word or PDF document)
- Explanation of relevant excursions related to course topics. Excursion requests are encouraged; however, request are not guaranteed. (1-2 pages)
- Recruiting Strategy - before and after program (Word or PDF document)

Judging Criteria: The UIW European summer teaching selection committee will base the decision utilizing the evaluation guidelines found on page four (4) of this document. All decisions are final.
