QEP at a Glance
Student Outcomes
UIW’s QEP focuses on two student outcomes. Through our QEP, students will:
- read, analyze, and synthesize complex texts for specific purposes.
- utilize a variety of strategies to enhance reading comprehension in both general and discipline-specific contexts.
QEP Initiatives
QEP initiatives prioritize student learning and the professional development of faculty and peer tutors. These initiatives are organized into a three-tier framework:
Tier 1: Campus-wide initiatives
Text-dependent assignments engage students with specific texts to promote deeper comprehension and critical thinking by requiring them to anchor their responses in textual evidence (e.g., essays, presentations, discussions, creative projects). These assignments will be paired with evidence-based reading strategies to support students in understanding the assigned readings. This activity will be applied at three benchmark moments: FYES and in two courses within Majors (one toward the middle and one toward the end).
Resources such as detailed guides of reading strategies and tip sheets will be posted on the QEP website. These resources are items that faculty can use and post in their courses to guide students in understanding assigned readings. Peer tutors can also use these resources in tutoring sessions.
The CTL will host two QEP sessions each semester. Sessions will address reading comprehension and explore generative AI as a tool to support reading comprehension.
Tier 2: Targeted activities for specific groups, providing specialized support
Academies will be grouped by discipline. Content will focus on reading strategies that assist students in completing text-dependent assignments. Faculty will also have the opportunity to create or enhance text-dependent assignments during the academy. Priority will be given to faculty teaching benchmark courses, but opportunities will also be available for other faculty to attend.
A training program will be developed for the peer tutors working at the AI-Supported Reading, Writing, and Learning Center.
Tier 3: Individualized support
The current Writing and Learning center will be expanded into an AI-Supported Reading, Writing, and Learning Center. Students will receive individualized reading assistance from peer tutors and a UIW Specific AI-Interface.
